The Faculty of Technical Teacher Education, under Dr. Assefa Abahumna, offers seven departments: Electrical Engineering, Wood Science/Technology, Construction Technology, Design and Drafting, Surveying, Automotive Technology, and Manufacturing. Together, with a staff of approximately 200 (1/3 of whom are new), one aim is to encourage females to join this faculty. There are plans to strengthen the engineering departments for capacity building by 2007-2008. Academically, the “quality of education is important, especially with so many young and new teachers who need pedagogical training, in which case, the HDP is helping.”
Starting this year, freshman students are being assigned an advisor to provide academic guidance. Dr. Assefa expresses the need of all his staff to respect their duties and responsibilities to their fullest capacity. He also believes that “the University should serve the community based on their demands. We are part of the community. We can’t move forward without the community’s involvement and sharing experiences. They should always feel invited to join us.” The Faculty of Technical Teacher Education aims to move the University into this new innovation era.
