Adama university was established as Nazareth technical college with the funding from world bank and started its operation in 1993/94 with the primary mission of advancing the quality of human life through strategically selected program of instruction research and publication services , especially in technical fields.
Taking into account the uniqueness of the college, some people agree that the construction of such a college was envisaged not only to serve Ethiopia but also provide services for those countries in eastern part of Africa.
As a sole provider of the degree level technical teacher for the TEVT sector in the country , its regular degree program is designed to produce technically competent teachers equipped with the relevant teachers equipped with the relevant teacher education courses.
It started operation in offering degree program in five major areas and diploma program in seven departments. The degree program was in Automotive, Construction ,Electrical/Electronics , manufacturing and Surveying Technology. The diploma program was in industrial Education ,Automotive ,Construction ,Drafting , Electrical/Electronics, Manufacturing and Surveying Technology.
Since then a number of changes have occurred in the programs offered and in its name as well .Major changes include the phrasing out of the diploma Industrial Education program in 1999/2000 and the degree Drafting and Surveying Technology program.The college was renamed as Nazareth College of Technical Teacher Education by the Ministry of Education to clearly establish its mission during that period .
A continual review of the curriculum o fits program has led not only to the strengthening of the degree program since 2002/2003.
The growing demand for non technical fields of study in Nazareth and its surrounding resulted in the opening of program in 1998/1999.Following such development, the need for training for Business Education was taken as one of the relevant teacher training areas . accounting and Business management degree programs were incorporated in the regular program staring 2002/2003.At the same period a degree program in computer science was started in the regular program .
Since 1994/1995,1934 students in diploma program and 691 students in the degree program have graduated in both the regular and extension programs. The student enrollment has increased from 250 in 1993/1994 to 4000 in 2004/2005 operation. Currently, the University offers regular degree programs in seven technical fields (Automotive, Construction, Design and Drafting , surveying ,electrical-electronics , Manufacturing and wood technology) and five business education programs (Accounting, Business management, Marketing and sales, Purchasing and supplies management &Banking and Insurance ). It has a total of 230 academic and 440 administrative staff .one of the challenge facing the college is the lack of local PHD staff.
I n the near future ,the university will open nine faculties and two schools (Technical teacher Education, Business Teacher Education ,Computer and informatics technology agriculture, medical sciences , language studies and school of graduate students ) .This increases the number of faculties and senior academic staff.
Location
Nazareth is situated 96 km south-east of the capital, Addis Ababa. The college is on the eastern slopes of the hills of the valley town Nazareth and is surrounded by a picturesque natural environment with a variety of species of endemic birds.
Campus
The campus is spread over 60 acres of land. The main building is located at the center with the staff quarters on the eastern slope and the student dormitories on the slope to the north. All buildings and facilities are connected by paved roads, paths and covered walks. The stone masonry buildings project modern architecture in their simplicity and starkness by a landscape exploiting the slopes.
